New £2 bus fare cap across England from January

The Department for Transport has announced single bus tickets will be capped at £2 in England outside London from 1st January to 31st December 2027.

The scheme will replace the current £3 cap and ensure that eligible single bus fares on participating services cost no more than £2. It will particularly benefit those making longer journeys such as within rural and coastal communities where fares can be significantly higher.

The new cap is backed by £400 million of extra government funding and will help millions of passengers with the cost of everyday travel and supporting access to work, education, healthcare and leisure.

The government have committed more than £3 billion for buses over the next 3 years and have stated they remain committed to ensuring busses remain affordable, reliable and accessible. By reducing fares, supporting local transport authorities and providing long-term funding certainty, they are hoping to help people stay connected to opportunities, support local economies and lay the foundations for stronger bus networks across the country.
