Public Transport

When you first move into a new area, working out what public transport options are available, where the nearest bus stop is, and what discounts are available is usually the last thing on your mind. We have put all the information you might need below. Click on the following sections to find local information that is relevant to you.

Bus Travel
The Arboretum is well-connected for travel between Haverhill, Cambridge, and Bury St Edmunds. The Research Park bus stops are your closest and can be found on the A1307 just outside The Arboretum with an approx. 4 min walk.

The Stagecoach 13/13A/X13 provides links to Haverhill and Cambridge, operating approx. every 60 mins Monday – Saturday. The 13 only operates on Sundays and departs approx. every 60 mins. Please be aware, changes to the timetable may occur during bank holidays.

For connections to Bury St Edmunds, use the 13/13A/X13 service to Haverhill Bus Station and use the Stephensons of Essex service 15X to Bury St Edmunds.

Bus Passes
There are a selection of local incentives throughout Suffolk to promote travelling by public transport; including bus passes. You may be entitled to apply for an age-related bus pass which allows free off-peak bus travel. To apply or to find out further information, please visit the Suffolk on Board website. Additionally, you can apply for a bus pass if you have an eligible disability. Click here to find out more.

For those aged between 16 and 19, you can apply for the Suffolk Endeavour Card. This card is free to apply for and gives you at least 25% off the cost of bus travel. The only requirement is that your journey either starts or finishes in Suffolk. Apply for the card through the Suffolk on Board website.

Train Travel
Your nearest station is Whittlesford Parkway, which is approximately 19 km away. The station provides some step-free access to platforms but please note that there is no step free access between the platforms at the station. Access to the platform for Cambridge-bound journies, can be found from Station Road West and for London-bound journies, from Station Road East (3km distance between platform access). Car parking is available with 348 spaces (excluding 17 accessible spaces). 48 Cycle storage spaces are available at this station, which is sheltered. Cambridge Rail Station, is approximately 28 km away (a 1-hour bus journey on the X13), and may be preferred. The station provides connecting services to London, Norwich, Ipswich, and Colchester.
Cambridge Rail Station has 2850 sheltered cycle storage spaces and CCTV coverage.
Alternatively, if you would prefer to drive to the train station, there are 353 parking spaces available, of which 23 are accessible. The station offers step-free access from the car park to all platforms and staff assistance on hand 08:00 – 20:00 Monday to Sunday.

National Railcards
When using the train for leisure purposes, railcards are a great way to receive discounts on the cost of rail tickets. There are various options available, such as; 16-17 saver, 16-25, 26-30, two-together, disabled person or the senior railcard. Most railcards cost £30 to purchase for a year, however, you will typically save 1/3rd off rail fares. Find out more information and how to apply on the Railcard website.
